I have the cutest children’s book that teaches simple Mandarin words. With summer here, what better time to teach your child some basic Chinese? I want to give it away to one of you! Here are the rules…
Comment to this post with:
Your child’s first name
Your child’s age
A cute thing that they have said or still say
I will be giving away 2 of the books by putting all responses in a bucket and randomly pulling the first two names.
I’ll go first, since I don’t count!
Heather
Now 18
Once said after she ran straight into my bent over backside, “Ouch, Mama, you are not soft back there like Maw Maw!”

Ana; age 4;
When I take my girls to preschool, Ana explains to here sister Lia, “Mama will always, always, always, always come back for us.” Makes me smile:).
One day while we were in the Costco bathroom Simone said loudly, “Mommy why are all of these hookers in here?” Referring to the hooks that you hang your purse on in the bathroom.
Simone age 5
(Sophie age 3)
I love how she is learning that one word can have different meanings!! So much fun.
I hope we win. If not where can we purchase this workbook?

We brought her home when she was 2.5. When she was 3 she looked up at me and said, ” Why did it take you so long to come and get me?”
Maura

Her favorite word is “why” which she responds to practically every question; “Watch this, watch this!”; We just got back from D*isneyW*orld and she said, “I don’t want to go back to a hotel!”
Lucy LiKun
Age 3
The neighbor was outside showing off her newborn baby girl, and asked Lucy if she would like to see her or hold her. Lucy looked away disinterested and replied “No thank you, all babies do are poop and cry!”
I about died..I have NO IDEA where this came from! But, at least she used her manners……..LOL.
Tiana Claire
3 yrs
Tiana isn’t talking much yet but her daddy has taught her something he taught both boys when they were little. He’ll say “Who loves you baby?” and he wants her to say “Dada!”. Well, she’s a true Wicks as she likes to tease him. When he asks her “Who loves you baby?” and I’m in the room she say “Mama!” and laugh!
Jonah, 4 and Grady 2 1/2
Jonah says that he doesn’t want to go to Heaven because he’s scared of the dinosaur souls up there.
Caylei Hope ZhiLing

Caylei is just now starting to “use” the potty. She likes to sit on the potty (fully dressed, most of the time), and then say “All Done” when she’s finished!!
Gracelyn Yi Mei
Age: 22 months
Gracelyn isn’t speaking full sentences yet but the one cute thing she does is call her belly “button” her mutton.
Braden Youjun
age 4
A couple weeks ago, Braden found his sister’s baton and took it and used it like a cane and said, “Look at me! I’m Noo-nee (his elderly grandpa that uses a cane)!!!!”
Sera XiaoSheng
3 years old
Last week she told me that her baby brother was upstairs crying because he wanted his mommy. Sera is our only child, but we have quite the extended imaginary family.
Easton
3.5 years old
About a month ago he declared that he did not like girls.
I chuckled to myself and said, “But I’m a girl …” and he responded, “no, you’re mom.”
And so thinking on my feet I said, “but you like Daphne on Scooby Doo.” (he has quite a crush on her!)
And so very seriously and with a VERY disgusted look on his face he said, “Mom, I like her because she’s a cartoon and she is NOT real.”
Millie
age 3 1/2
our sweet Millie doesnt speak YET.
however, the sound of her humming “Jesus Loves Me” brings tears to my eyes!
‘ButterCup’ & ‘Sweat Pea’
5 & 3
While listening to them play one day, ButterCup was overheard saying to SweatPea…’You’re bigger than a duck, you silly goose!’
Li’l Empress
age 22 mos
home for 9 months now
For the longest time, she said “Baba” pretty exclusively. We thought she was a Daddy’s girl and figured she’d fall in love with Mama soon enough. When her first English word was “Bicah!” (her brother’s name is Micah), we quickly put two and two together. She’s been a Mama’s girl from the start – we just were slow on the comprehension! And now, Baba is still Mama and DaDa is Daddy.
Xiaohua age 7
Home for ten months
Looking at her new swingset just delivered and still in boxes, Xiaohua frowned and said “What’s Zat Mommy?”
My daughter Maia is now 6 1/2. When she was 2 1/2 she went back to China with us when we adopted her younger sister. At that age, everytime she wanted us to pick her up (which was OFTEN) she would say “hugga, hugga, hugga” for hug me. Our guide in China, a young man in his twenties with no children of his own yet, finally asked us, “How many times IS she going to say that?” She responded to him “about a million today.” The look on his face was priceless. She had obviously heard us say more than once that she said that about a million times a day.
Mia
4 years
Mia no longer has bum bums (gumboots) but still has lots of flavorites (favourites).
Mia Hope
3 years old
Mia is in speech therapy twice a week, so she is speaking much better these days (thank goodness!); but it is soooooo cute when she refers to herself as “Mia Mia” : )
Tasja 19 bio., Wyatt 11 bio, Emmet 8 Korea, Phoebe 6 Korea, Charis 6 Hangzhou China and Molly Mei 2 DainBai China.
For my China girls “I love you Mommy, wo ah knee” is the best in the wrld from Charis and “Mommma” from my Molly Mei who has struggled with speech because of her cleft and only has been home since Dec. 08.
Emily
3 1/2 years old
Emily’s vocabulary just exploded after turning 3. I saw her playing with her dolls one day and saying to them: “go eat your dinner, right now, seat at the table with your two feet out, use your napkin not your sleeve”. Men, does she sounds like me, or what? LOL
Mommy, I LOVE your body! I think you are beautiful even with all your specs and bumps. (freckles and moles)
uh oh! Did follow the directions on my previous comment.
Jianna
Age 6
Mommy, I LOVE your body! I think you are beautiful, even with all your specs and bumps. (freckles and moles)
I asked her one day if she was my Chinese baby girl. She looked at me puzzeled and said “Mommy I am not Chinese I don’t speak Spanish!”
Camie
Age 3
On the way home one Sunday after church, Camie says, “look momma, I’m a Superhero.” I said, “you are? Can you fly? Do you have x-ray vision. She replied, “no momma, I’m a Superhero for Jesus!”
Meikiina – 7, Brynlee – 5
Brynlee (at age 4) is sitting thinking. She says, “Mama, how do we learn these words?” I asked her what words she’s wondering about. She says (putting her hands up wide in the air), “See these words, all the words we say. How do we learn to say them all?”
Driving home in the car, out of the blue ,my 5 year old daughter asked me what a saint was.
I told her a saint was someone who tries to help other people. She paused and said,
“you are a saint Mommy because you try to help the babies”. As she often does,
she brought tears to my eyes.
Katie 3 1/2, Ella 2 1/2
Katie cozied up to me one winter morning, grabbed my sweater and said, “Mom, I want to snap your buns” (what she really meant was I want to “button your buttons” – but “snap your buns” is just hilarious!).
Lily
Age 4
As she was showing a friend of mine her room, she went to the mirror with my friend, looked in it and she said, “I’m Chinese, what kind are you?”
Kai & Anna Grace
5 & 4
While discussing with their Dad if they should be allowed to watch TV after dinner, Kai immediately jumped in with, “Yes, Mama. We should. You gotta trust me on this one!”
You guys sure make me miss the “kid days”….now that I am in “teen years” with mine…
Avery
4 in two weeks
Talks very little due to more cleft surgery needed. But some things are as clear as day. She can say “pacaderm” perfectly, and simply will not call an elephant by the elephant name.
Glenys, age 5. Would love to have one.
Micah has always talked a mile a minute, even before his cleft repair. It is often difficult to understand him, but that doesn’t stop him from trying. My favorite current saying, “Mama, get your knitting noodles, sit on your bottom and watch TV with Micah!”
Elisabeth
2 1/2
took her swimming for the first time and she was pretty upset at first. finally, she looked out into the pool, pointed and said “water” like she just made the realization. it was very cute and by the time we were ready to leave 2 hours later, we couldn’t get her out of there!!
Maddy
age 5
While playing in the inflatable pool, kept dunking her hair, getting it all wet, lifting it up, and yells out, “I have a hair dude mommy.”
Annslee and Coby
Age: 4.5 and 18 months
My daughter is a character! She says so many funny things but lately she calls me “your wife” to her Daddy … as in “Daddy, YOUR wife wants you to come to dinner” Oh, and if her little brother is being bad he is definitely “YOUR son” and not her usual “My baby brother” LOL
Kenzie
age 2 1/2
We were in K@hls and she was talking pretty loudly. She said, “Mama, I love you.” I told her I loved her too. Then she said, “Mama, I happy.” I said, “I’m happy too, but I would be a lot happier if you would be quieter.” Kenzie said, “Not gonna happen.”
Jia-Li
Age 5 1/2
I used to ask my daughter where she got her belly button from and her frequent answer was “China”. At 3 years old she started to develop quite a sense of humour. One morning during cuddle time in bed, I asked her the same question — “Mama sees your belly button, where did you get it from?” She looked down at it, then back up at me, and with a very serious expression she replied “Walmart”.
love the idea…
Your child’s first name – Jade
Your child’s age – 7
A cute thing that they have said or still say – She told a guy who had a very pregnant wife ….He told her his Baby girl was in his wifes tummy ….Jade rolled her eyes and said “How stupid do you think I am, EVERYONE KNOWS BABIES COME FROM CHINA” she was maybe 4 when this happened…
we still laugh about this one
Jolene
Jade

She told a man with a very pregnant wife in walmart – that his wife did not have a baby in her tummy, “Every one knows Babies come from CHINA” said with all the authority a 3 1/2 year old could muster……the wife and I fell over and laughed…
Emma

Emma is my more quite child but every now and then she gets her zigners in….she has a love for igh heels that I cannot explain but after arguing with her one school morning I let her wear the Cinderella light up heels to preschool…..when she walked in the teacher asked her what she was wearing and with the supiour tone of a 4 year old she said my cinderella heels of course……I thought Karen was going to loose it ….

Sophie

“bank-e, bank-e, bank-eeee!” (blankey)
Lotus
Almost 3 yrs.
Lotus was about 10 mos behind in speech last year, after speech therapy since last August she has recently had a speech explosion and I mean explosion. Some of the words out of her mouth………So last weekend we went for a haircut and earrings, I also painted her nails and this is the conversation we had.
Mommy: ” LoLo you are a real DIVA today, getting your haircut, ears pierced and nails painted.” Lotus: “NOOOO Mommy, I am NOT a DIVA I AM A PRINCESS! I Princess Lolo!” Ever since then if I mention the word Diva she tells me No I am a princess mommy!
Here is a memorable quote from my 14-year-old last year….”Mama, when I am as old as you, I hope I am as pretty as you are.”
I don’t know how to take that….but I thought it was sweet. [even if she does think I am OLD]
My daughter Kylie is 5 and Sophie is 3.
Sophie is obsessed with turtles, particularly sea turtles. She makes us call her “Hatchling” which is what you call a baby turtle. If I want her to eat a certain food, all I have to tell her is that it is fish and she’ll eat it because “that’s what the hatchlings eat!”
The Winners are…
